A prominent politician cum business mogul, Dr Ime Sampson Umanah, died on Monday, 25th May 2015. Until his death, he was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom state and a prominent critic of the state governor, Godswill Akpabio.
Details of the circumstances surrounding the death of the late businessman who was the Managing Director of Imesco Group of Companies is still controversial. Though he was said to be on his way back from a court case with Governor Akpabio when the sudden tragic event occured, a report has it that he was involved in a ghastly motor accident. However, a chieftain of the APC and former Commissioner for Information, Mr Ita Awak alleged that Dr Ime was killed, claiming that the death was politically motivated.
Reacting to the news, a former Minister of Petroleum, Atuekong Don Etiebet said Umanah’s death was a big loss to Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.
He said:“It was shedding of tears, very devastating, hurtful and incomprehensible that Dr. Ime Sampson Umana should die in an accident. It is one too many of our revered leaders and frontline outspoken politicians, particularly from Abak-Five, who have died within a year.”
