A day after a failed attempt to oust him, the president of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza has returned home. This was contained in a message posted on the official twitter page of the presidential office.
Above tweet (in French) is translated: “I am back in Burundi. I congratulate the army and the police for their patriotism. Above all, I congratulate the Burundian people for their patience.”
General Godefroid Niyombare, a former intelligence chief, announced Nkurunziza's ouster on Wednesday on a private radio station while Nkurunziza was in neighbouring Tanzania for a regional summit. Niyombare cited the Burundian leader’s controversial bid to seek a third term in office as the reason for the coup.
