“I am coming home. I am very excited,” Benítez said as he fights back tears.
“I promise work and dedication, I hope that things go well and that we win titles, that the team plays well and that we can return the confidence that has been placed in us.” he prayed.
Rafa, as he is colloqually called, was born in Madrid and he played football throughout his youth and also joined Real Madrid Academy, combining his football career with his university studies.He joined Real Madrid's coaching staff at the age of 26, going on to work as the under 19 and reserve team coach, and assistant manager for the senior team.
Benítez replaced the former manager, Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked following a disappointing end to the 2014-2015 season where they lost the Champions League challege to Juventus at the semi-final stage, although he won the clubs 10th Champion's League Title last year.
Real Madrid's president, Florentino Pérez, was asked about the possible candidates for the job when he announced the sacking of Ancelotti last week to which he inted "It would be good if the new manager spoke Spanish."
